Thermogun or digital thermometer
A thermogun is fast and it does not touch skin, so it is the right tool when you are screening a queue. It is also more affected by sweat, a cold room or a patient who just walked in from the sun.
A digital clinical thermometer is slower and needs cleaning between patients, but under the arm or in the mouth it gives the reading a clinician will act on. Most clinics keep both.
If you run a vaccine fridge you need a cold chain thermometer as well. A fridge thermometer is not optional under Kenyan immunisation guidance.
What to check before you buy
- Stated accuracy. Look for plus or minus 0.2 degrees at clinical range.
- A brand you can get serviced. Unbranded guns drift and cannot be calibrated.
- Battery type and whether spares are easy to find.
- Whether it holds a memory of past readings for records.
Common questions
Are thermoguns accurate enough for diagnosis? They are a screening tool. If a reading is high, confirm it with a clinical thermometer before you act on it.
Do you supply in bulk for schools and offices? Yes and the price improves with volume.
