Which parameters do you actually need

Three parameter gives you ECG, SpO2 and non invasive blood pressure. That covers general ward and recovery.

Five parameter adds temperature and respiration. This is the sensible standard for casualty and high dependency.

Capnography matters if you ventilate. If you do not ventilate, you are paying for a module nobody will switch on.

For neonates the probes are the point. An adult SpO2 probe will not read on a newborn foot, so buy a monitor that ships with neonatal probes rather than one that can accept them.

What to check before you buy

• Which probes and cuffs are included and what replacements cost. Consumables are the real bill.
• Battery runtime when mains fails, which in Kenya is not a hypothetical.
• Whether alarms are adjustable per bed and whether they are loud enough for your ward.
• Local service. A monitor waiting three months for a board is not a monitor.
• Pharmacy and Poisons Board registration.
