Buying consumables properly
Buy by the case, not the piece. The price per unit falls sharply at case quantity and consumables do not expire quickly if they are stored dry.
Watch the cotton wool weight. A 500g roll at the same price as a 400g roll is not a bargain if the 500g is loosely rolled. Ask for the compressed weight.
Soluset matters for children. A burette set limits how much fluid can run in at once. For paediatrics that is a safety device, not a convenience.
Giving sets are not all the same. A blood transfusion set has a filter. A standard IV set does not. Do not substitute one for the other.
What to check before you buy
- Sterility and expiry date on every sealed pack.
- Drip factor on giving sets, usually 15 or 20 drops per millilitre.
- Whether cotton wool is medical grade absorbent, not upholstery filler.
- Case quantity and the price at that quantity.
- Lead time, so you order before you run out rather than after.
