An 18 or 24 litre pressure autoclave handles a dressing set, a suture set and a delivery set in one cycle, which is enough for a clinic or a small maternity. A theatre that runs daily lists needs a 50 litre electric autoclave with timed cycles. Laboratories and hospitals go to 100 litres.
Class B or class N?
Dental and surgical handpieces with hollow parts need a class B autoclave with a vacuum cycle. Plain instruments and linen are fine in a class N unit. If you are unsure, tell us what you sterilise and we point you to the right one.
